LEVITY AND LONGING

Levity and Longing Series Summary
In this series, Lindsay took inspiration from a family celebration one New Year’s Eve. Each family member wrote down something that they hoped for in the year to come, put that in a homemade “boat” of sorts that they’d made of biodegradable found objects and sent them out to sea with a lit candle on top. Some “boats” sank immediately. Some drifted off briefly before falling apart. And, incredibly, some floated off into the distance, much to the crowd’s glee and amazement.
Lindsay felt this was a perfect analogy of what actually happens in life. We carry an idea of something we hope for in our future—a role, a career, a relationship—and we build our lives around it. The journey can be a simple one or incredibly complex. Sometimes we are successful. Or maybe we get sidetracked, unforeseen circumstances impact our priorities, relationships change, or we simply lose our way. Ultimately, all kinds of events redirect us and we wind up someplace quite different than anticipated, for better or for worse.
In this series, paper planes and boats represent the fragility of what we put out into the world. As these objects sink, crash, get tangled up or head off into the sunset unscathed, their journeys have been mapped along the way. Through the intertwining of thread, these works highlight the commonality of our experiences, how our lives are connected, the impact we have on one another and the beauty in seeing where the journey takes us.
